Russians Steal Butter En Masse Second Month In Row

The number of thefts continues to grow.

Police officers have opened about 50 criminal cases for theft of butter in several regions of Russia. The number of thefts of this product increased in October and continues to grow, the website The Moscow Times noted.

Cases of theft of butter from stores have increased in Moscow, the Moscow region, Tver, Petrozavodsk, Lipetsk, Syzran and other cities. Other goods are also stolen from grocery stores, but butter is often taken in several packages.

In the city of Shuya in the Ivanovo region, an unknown person stole 11 packs of butter and other goods from a supermarket for a total of just over 4 thousand rubles. In Ulan-Ude, a man and a woman stole butter and other goods. They were later detained by the police, the couple partially compensated for the damage, they were given a measure in the form of a written undertaking not to leave, while the man was offered to sign a contract for war. A similar offer was made to a woman from the Nizhny Novgorod region who stole 29 packs of butter. On November 21, a 34-year-old man stole 8 packs of butter from a supermarket in Syzran. He was detained.

After a sharp jump in butter prices this fall, Russians began stealing the product en masse from supermarkets. At the end of October, it was reported that cases of theft of this product had increased sharply in Russia.

To combat this problem, the management of one of the Kirovsky stores in the center of Yekaterinburg decided to pack butter in protective plastic containers similar to those used to store small electronics in home appliance stores.

Stores in St. Petersburg have also encountered a similar problem. For example, ads appeared on the shelves of the Dixie chain asking people to contact sellers for butter, since the product itself has been removed from the display cases. In St. Petersburg's VkusVill stores, butter is now stored in refrigerators at the checkout along with caviar and expensive alcohol.

According to Rosstat, the growth in prices for butter since the beginning of the year was 27.5%, which put it in the top of the most expensive products. According to Rosstat, only potatoes are growing faster (by 64.1% since the beginning of the year). Prices for lamb are growing slightly slower — by 21.2% over 10 months.

The result for butter recorded by Rosstat was a record since 2007, when over the same period (January-October) prices for butter jumped by 31.9%.
