South Korea Martial Law: Opposition Delivers Tough Ultimatum To President

Senior aides to Yoon Suk Yeol resigned en masse.

The opposition Democratic Party of Korea has called on President Yoon Suk Yeol to resign immediately after martial law was declared and subsequently cancelled by the country's parliament.

This is reported by the agency Yonhap.

During an emergency meeting in the National Assembly, deputies of the opposition political force announced that they would immediately begin the process of impeachment of the head of state if he himself does not resign.

‘Yoon's declaration of martial law is a clear violation of the Constitution. He has not adhered to any of the requirements of the Basic Law to declare such a regime. It is a serious act of rebellion and an excellent reason for impeachment,’ the Democratic Party of Korea resolution said.

Meanwhile, Yoon Suk Yeol's senior aides, as well as his chief of staff, resigned en masse over the scandalous decision and its further blocking by parliament.

They include the president's chief of staff - Chung Jin-suk, national security adviser Shin Won-sik, policy chief Sung Tae-yoon, as well as seven other senior aides.

Political Crisis in South Korea

In the afternoon of 3 December, President Yoon Suk Yeol of the Republic of Korea unexpectedly declared martial law in the country.

He cited as the reason the opposition, which he said was an ‘anti-state force’ that was paralysing the country's work.

The decision provoked clashes with law enforcers and the military outside the parliament building.

A few hours after the scandalous decision, the parliament of the Republic of Korea approved a resolution demanding the cancellation of martial law in the country. Later, a similar decision was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

In the evening, Yeol cancelled martial law in South Korea. The special regime in the country had been in effect for more than six hours.
