Opposition Leader: Yoon Suk Yeol Is No Longer South Korea's President

The politician and ministers are about to be formally charged with state treason.

The opposition Democratic Party of South Korea will bring charges of treason against President Yoon Suk Yeol, who the day before declared martial law in the country, and impeach him, Yonhap reports.

It is noted that the opposition also plans to accuse the defence and interior ministers of treason.

Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung called the declaration of martial law ‘illegal,’ saying Yoon ‘is no longer the president’ of South Korea.

Parliament must vote in favour of starting impeachment proceedings within 72 hours after the motion is put to the plenary, requiring a two-thirds majority in the 300-member parliament.

Yonhap writes that the Democratic Party and other small opposition parties together have 192 seats, meaning that at least eight of the ruling party's 108 lawmakers would have to support the impeachment in order for it to be adopted.

The Constitutional Court will then rule on whether Yoon's dismissal is justified. The president's powers will be suspended while the court hearing is underway. South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will take over Yoon's duties.
