SpaceX Launched Ship With Crew Of Four Tourists Into Orbit

The Crew Dragon capsule is set to reach a record altitude for near-Earth orbit.

The American space company SpaceX launched the Falcon 9 launch vehicle with the Crew Dragon spacecraft, which has four tourists on board. The launch was broadcast on the SpaceX account on the X social network.

The launch of the commercial Polaris Dawn mission took place from the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 12:24 Minsk time.

As part of the mission, non-professional astronauts will go into outer space for the first time in history. They will do this in spacesuits developed by SpaceX. According to the plan, the flight will last five days.

Their mission in space was named Polaris Dawn. As part of it, CNN reminds, the Crew Dragon capsule should reach a record altitude for near-Earth orbit, surpassing the achievement of the astronauts of the Gemini 11 manned spacecraft in 1966 (1,373 km) by 32 km. On the third day of the flight, the first spacewalk of non-professional astronauts should take place. It is planned that this will happen when the Crew Dragon is in a lower orbit 700 km above the Earth.

The Polaris Dawn project was organized by American billionaire and amateur pilot Jared Isaacman. In 2021, he signed a contract with SpaceX for three space flights, Polaris Dawn is the first of them.

Among the space tourists are Isaacman himself, former military pilot Scott Poteet, head of the SpaceX astronaut training program Sarah Gillis and former NASA medical and biological flight director, the company's chief space operations engineer Anna Menon.
