Switzerland has submitted an application to join the pan-European project in September 2024.
The EU leadership has officially invited Switzerland to participate in the ‘military Schengen’ programme, which is designed to ensure the rapid transfer of mobile army units across the continent without significant delays when crossing borders. The corresponding decision was taken by the EU Council. Switzerland has submitted an application to participate in the said pan-European project in September 2024.
‘The Council of the EU ... confirms that Switzerland's participation in the ‘military mobility’ project under the Permanent Structured Defence Partnership (PESCO) programme meets the conditions of the programme and will bring significant added value,’ the document posted on the EU Council website said.
The PESCO project has been developed by the EU and NATO member states since 2018. Its goal is to standardise procedures as much as possible for the sake of rapid redeployment of military units across Europe.
