Russians Destroy Unique DPRK Air Defence System Near Kursk

The terrified Russian troops identified the target as an enemy one.

DPRK troops have delivered a unique air defence system to Kursk region. However, the Russians have destroyed it by mistake, Forbes writes.

When North Korea's 12,000-strong 11th Army Corps arrived in Kursk region to support Russian troops against Ukrainian forces, they brought anti-tank vehicles, howitzers, rocket launchers, and a rare air defence system.

This system combined a large wheeled chassis with radar and launchers from the Russian Tor SAM system, usually placed on a tracked base. It is so unusual that the Russian military probably did not recognise it as its own. On Friday, or a little earlier, Russian drones detected and destroyed this North Korean vehicle.

The Russians released video of the attack, believing they had struck a Ukrainian air defence system. However, it took outside observers several days to figure out exactly what was destroyed.

‘It seems that what was initially thought to be a ‘Western-made radar system’ is actually a North Korean version of a Tor SAM on a wheeled chassis,’ said Polish analyst WarVehicleTracker.

‘It's funny ... that Russia would hit its own SAM system,’ the analyst added, suggesting that the drone units were not warned of the arrival of the North Korean equipment.

The loss has hurt the Russian-North Korean grouping in Kursk, which has been trying to push the 20,000-strong Ukrainian military out of the bridgehead since November - largely unsuccessfully. One assault ended with 200 North Korean soldiers killed and wounded, while in another attack the Russians lost an entire battalion of 400 men.

Ukrainian drones are inflicting significant casualties. ‘The enemy has achieved sufficient scale and diversity of its drones and honed the tactics of their use,’ said a Russian military blogger. The tanks ‘simply do not reach the line of attack.’
