Trump Wants To Fire About 50,000 Officials

The new US president has “declared war” on the deep state.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his team has launched major reforms in federal agencies and that more than a thousand employees appointed by the administration of his predecessor Joe Biden will be fired.

The Republican announced on social media, in particular, four high-profile dismissals, including the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Army, General Mark Milley, from the post of adviser.

As two sources told Reuters, Trump may fire about 50,000 federal employees and replace them with loyal appointees in a fight against the so-called “deep state” that he talked about a lot during the election campaign.

Trump also signed an order on Monday to create an expert group called the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE)

, which will be headed by the head of Tesla, billionaire Elon Musk. The new agency is designed to dramatically reduce government spending by eliminating a slew of federal agencies and cutting three-quarters of jobs. But DOGE, despite its “department” in its name, is not a department and has limited formal authority to implement any reorganization or even the sweeping cuts Musk has proposed.

Civil service unions, watchdog groups, and advocacy groups have filed lawsuits over DOGE’s uncertain legal status. The law firm National Security Counselors argues that the new agency violates a 1972 law governing federal agencies.

Critics of the president’s early decisions and unions representing U.S. government employees say there is no deep state and that Trump and his allies are using conspiracy theories to justify their takeover of the executive branch of government.
