As humanitarian aid.
Lithuanian Customs has decided to hand over cars confiscated on the border with Belarus to Ukraine as humanitarian aid. We are talking about those cars that were used to smuggle cigarettes.
According to the official statement of Lithuanian Customs, this fate will also befall three cars detained on January 17 by employees of the Criminal Customs and Vilnius Territorial Customs at the checkpoint in Medininkai. Law enforcement officers found hiding places in them, in which the smugglers hid a total of more than 3 thousand packs of cigarettes. Customs officers estimated the value of the contraband at 13,573 euros, including taxes.
The contraband was identified using X-ray equipment. Hiding places under the seats, on the thresholds of the cars, on the dashboard and in other places were found in BMW X5, Mercedes Benz and BMW X6 cars. All the cars were coming from Belarus and were driven by Belarusian citizens.
As explained by the Lithuanian Customs Service, administrative offense reports for smuggling were drawn up against the violators. For this, the drivers can pay hefty fines — from 2 to 6 thousand euros, and also lose the cars themselves (the issue of their confiscation is currently being resolved, but for now the cars are simply detained).
“Such cars are then usually transferred for the needs of Ukraine. In 2024, Lithuanian Customs transferred 114 confiscated cars to Ukraine as humanitarian aid,” the Lithuanian agency said.
