New Major Fire Breaks Out In Los Angeles

Evacuation of 31,000 people has begun and a nuclear power plant is under threat.

The new wildfire, dubbed ‘Hughes’, broke out Wednesday about 40 miles north of Los Angeles It quickly spread to an area of more than 38 square kilometres due to strong winds and dry vegetation. Authorities issued the order to evacuate more than 31,000 people.

Strong winds spread the fire over a large area, raising a huge column of black smoke near Castaic Lake, a popular holiday destination. According to the Daily Mail, authorities are most concerned about the risk of the fire spreading to a nearby nuclear power plant. Wildfire expert Jacob Wagley called the situation ‘extremely serious,’ according to the New York Post.

‘This fire is going to be a ‘nuclear’ fire, it's very large. Knowing the conditions in the area, and given how strong winds affect the spread of the fire, we can expect a huge scale,’ the US publication quoted Weigley as saying.

According to local media, despite the rapid spread of the fire, no destruction or damage to buildings has been reported so far. More than four thousand rescuers have been deployed to fight the fire. Rescuers have partially evacuated people from the Castaic County Jail, which is south of the fire zone and houses up to 4,295 prisoners. They have removed 470 prisoners from one of the campuses.

While the fire is covering new areas, two large fires that started in the region on 7 January have been brought under control:

Eaton fire in East Los Angeles: containment is 91%;

the Palisades fire in the west: 68% containment.

Both fires have scorched more than 149.7 km² in total, 28 people have died, about 16,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
