The President and Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany have met with the survivors.
Germany's responsibility for the crimes of National Socialism has no statute of limitations, the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier is sure. The crimes of the ‘Third Reich’ are ‘part of our history and therefore also part of our identity, which we need to make sense of,’ he said on Monday, 27 January, visiting the memorial complex ‘Auschwitz-Birkenau’ on the day of the 80th anniversary of liberating the Auschwitz death camp, DW reports. Germany will never forget what the Nazis did, he emphasised.
Steinmeier noted that there are not many living witnesses who can tell about the crimes in Auschwitz and other places. Their stories and experiences are a warning and at the same time a chastisement for future generations, and what they share is ‘priceless,’ he said. These warnings should also be passed on to the next generations, the president added.
Auschwitz symbolises ‘the heinousness of unprecedented crimes against humanity’, he further noted. ‘As Federal President of Germany, I am grateful for the opportunity to be here and to join survivors and representatives of many countries in honouring the victims of the Holocaust today,’ he stressed.
