The airliner was making a landing at Ronald Reagan Airport.

On Wednesday evening, 29 January, a passenger plane went down near Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington, DC. It crashed into a helicopter in mid-air.

This is reported by CNN.

As reported in the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a passenger plane that fell into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport in Washington, crashed into a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter in the air while making a landing.

The aircraft was American Airlines Flight 5342 and was a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet. It had taken off from Wichita, Kansas earlier Wednesday. Media reports vary, but as they write, this aircraft can hold either up to 70 or 78 passengers.

The FAA also noted that their statement is based on preliminary information and is subject to change. Meanwhile, two US Department of Defence officials said, according to CNN, that a United States Army BlackHawk (H-60) helicopter crashed into the plane.

D.C. police said they are coordinating a search and rescue operation on the Potomac River with other agencies after receiving reports of the passenger plane crash. The statement said local police began receiving calls about the crash at 8:53 p.m. local time.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said US President Donald Trump had been briefed on the incident.

‘There are multiple agencies working on this response right now, with both federal and local law enforcement working together on the ground trying to save as many lives as possible. And the president will continue to monitor this situation. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Trump administration are with everyone involved,’ said Leavitt.

The investigation is being led by the National Transportation Safety Board in conjunction with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

American Airlines said 60 passengers and four members of the crew were on board the plane.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas confirmed that a passenger flight had crashed into a military helicopter in Washington.

‘A plane flying to the capital from Wichita, Kansas with approximately 60 passengers has crashed into a military helicopter,’ he wrote on the X social network.

CNN writes that according to a US Defence Department spokesman, there were three people on board the US Army Black Hawk helicopter that crashed into the passenger jet and there were no VIPs on board. At the same time, the publication added that high-ranking army officials often use the Black Hawk to move around the Washington area.
