Belarusian Opposition Leader Mikalai Statkevich Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize
MIKALAI STATKEVICH

There has been no news from the political prisoner for over 700 days.

The leader of the Belarusian opposition and political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Lithuanian politician and member of the European Parliament /b>Petras Auštrevičius.

“Member of the European Parliament Petras Auštrevičius registered leader of the Belarusian opposition Mikalai Statkevich as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. We made it before the deadline for applications,” wrote the political prisoner's allies.

It is important to note though that there has been no news from the leader of the Belarusian opposition and political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich for over 700 days.

The political prisoner was sentenced to 14 years in prison, accused of “organizing mass riots” (Article 293 of the Criminal Code of Belarus).

Since the beginning of July 2022, when Mikalai Statkevich began serving his sentence in the Hlybokaye colony, he has had 23 penalties. At least 9 times he was sent to the punishment cell — for periods of 7 to 10 days. The political prisoner celebrated the New Year in the punishment cell.

Mikalai Statkevich is being held in the colony under the harshest conditions: the politician is kept in solitary confinement in conditions dangerous to his health. It became known that Mikalai Statkevich had COVID-19 twice in prison.

Natallia Radzina, Editor-in-Chief of the Charter97.org website, demanded that the Belarusian authorities refute information received from several sources about the possible death of Mikalai Statkevich in prison.

“Show Mikalai Statkevich, if he is alive, to his closest and dearest person — Maryna Adamovich. Allow them a visit or at least a video call!

Otherwise, your silence will mean that the sources are right and Lukashenka and his punishers are responsible for the death of another political prisoner,” said Natallia Radzina.

A number of European politicians have joined the “Show Statkevich to the People!” campaign.
