The Lithuanian politician explained why he nominated the political prisoner for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Leader of the Belarusian opposition, political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the Lithuanian politician, member of the European Parliament Petras Auštrevičius.

“Yes, it’s true! Submitted successfully yesterday. Mikalai Statkevich is a long-time leader of Belarusian democratic forces (presidential candidate in 2010) who continues to fight for a free and democratic Belarus despite personal risks and life-threatening imprisonments. Mikalai is a symbol of political resistance against Lukashenka and inspiration for fight of democratic future of Belarus. We need to fight for lives of political prisoners and presentation of Mikolai Statkevich candidacy for Nobel Prize is on of ways to highlight his situation and situation of Belarus in general,” the Lithuanian politician told the Charter97.org website.
