They want to back up the operation with sufficient firepower.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will present US President Donald Trump with a plan to send up to 30,000 European troops to Ukraine to try to provide American protection for the deployment. This is reported by The Telegraph citing informed sources.
Starmer is expected to outline next week in Washington how European forces could oversee any ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. president.
But according to Western officials briefed on the plans, he will urge Trump to keep American fighter jets and missiles ready in Eastern Europe to respond with lethal force if Russia violates the terms of any truce.
The British-French plan for "peackeeping forces" was unveiled to Europe's top leaders at an emergency meeting in Paris earlier this week as they sought to react to the launch of Mr. Trump's peace negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
The plan was drawn up amid fears that the US president would “wash his hands” of Ukraine and any ceasefire almost immediately after the conclusion of any agreement.
Starmer will prove to Trump that it is in the interest of the US to continue to participate in preventing a Russian invasion after the end of hostilities.
According to the British-French plan, up to 30,000 European-led troops will be deployed to Ukrainian cities, ports and other critical infrastructure, such as nuclear power plants, far from the current frontline.
Rather than deploying a much larger force to the war-torn country, the mission will rely on “technical monitoring,” including intelligence, surveillance aircraft, drones and satellites, to provide a “complete picture of what's going on,” the Western official said.
The operation will be backed by sufficient firepower to “track and disrupt” these attacks to reopen Ukraine's airspace and secure commercial flights.
Marine patrol ships will also be sent to the Black Sea to monitor Russian threats to commercial shipping routes.
The plan outlined by Western officials is far from matching the 200,000-strong peacekeeping mission demanded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a possible price for signing a peace agreement.
But given the position of Germany, Spain and Italy, the European opportunities for ensuring the future of Ukraine look limited.
