Forbes: Ukrainian Forces Halt And Push Back Russia's 'Center' Group Near Pokrovsk

The Russians suffered weapon losses in a 3:1 ratio.

The large-scale offensive of Russian troops is about to end. Perhaps, only the US intervention against Ukraine could change the unstable situation of Russians, Forbes writes.

During the year after the capture of the ruins of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, the Center group, one of six such groups along the front line, slowly moved towards the fortress city of Pokrovsk, located about 50 km to the west.

The forces of this group, numbering at least 50,000 soldiers, most of whom are part of the 41st Combined Arms Army, finally reached the outskirts of Pokrovsk.

However, it cost them tens of thousands of soldiers and the loss of at least 2,200 vehicles, including the T-80, which burned down this weekend.

According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrsky, just in January, about 15,000 Russian troops were lost in the Pokrovsk area.

Ukrainian losses in this sector are much smaller after the retreat of damaged brigades from Avdiivka in February last year.

Naalsio analyst estimated that 2,300 units of Russian equipment were destroyed, damaged or captured in the Pokrovsky direction, while Ukrainian losses amounted to only 700 units. This indicates a ratio of more than three to one in favor of Ukraine.

Large losses explain why Russian troops were able to advance to Pokrovsk, but not capture it. This city is a key fortified point in a long chain of fortifications stretching north to Kharkiv.

"The operational group of the enemy 'Center' in the Pokrovsky direction for three days did not advance in any of the directions and was forced to retreat from previously occupied positions in several directions," the Ukrainian Center for Defence Strategies reported.

"The 41st Combined Arms Army is not able to continue the offensive to the north and north-west to fulfill the main task - to cover Pokrovsk from the west and block the path to Pavlograd."

Faced with difficulties, Russian commanders pay attention to other directions. "The main focus of the Russian command on the theater of operations is not on Pokrovsk, but on the nearby Novopavlovsk and Toretsk directions," they said.

In addition, the 41st Army may lose its strongest units, as the 90th Panzer Division is likely to be transferred from the Pokrovsky direction to the south, towards Andreevka, where Russian troops have achieved certain tactical successes, according to CDs.

This situation is a negative signal for the Russian military campaign, as one of its main offensives is losing momentum. At the same time, it is positive for the Russians that their commanders demonstrate a willingness to adapt to changes.
