Erdogan's New Turn

Turkey's sensational statements were not made by chance.

And while Trump is mocking Europe, Turkey entered the room.

There were two interesting statements from the Foreign Ministry and the President.

Turkish Foreign Minister: “We are in favor of Ukraine joining NATO. This is our official position.”

Erdogan: “Only Turkey can save the EU from the problems it got into because of the war in Ukraine. Ankara could strengthen European defense and solve the problem of the aging population on the continent. And this can only happen if Ankara is a member of the EU.”

Reformatting NATO, given the current US policy, will most likely be inevitable. Europe has begun to seriously worry about its own security. Yesterday, the almost-new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a potential reformatting of NATO.

Turkey, which joined NATO in 1952, is one of the most powerful armies in the Alliance. With real combat experience.

Ankara has been trying to become an EU member for many decades. And Erdogan has chosen the perfect moment to remind everyone about it.

The security component for Europe may now come to the fore and outweigh other reasons why Turkey was not accepted into the EU before (human rights, democratic values, etc.).

Turkey's influence has increased significantly in recent years. Russia surrendered Armenia, and Azerbaijan regained its control over Nagorno-Karabakh thanks to Turkey's support. The fall of the Assad regime in Syria is also unlikely to have happened without the Turks.

This is a country that would like to restore its greatness and influence in the region (and this is already happening).

Whether the EU will want such a member is a big question. After all, this is a country that will strive to increase its influence wherever it can reach.

If it joins, it will be the largest EU country in terms of population and somewhere in the 3rd-5th place in terms of GDP. With a young population.

But, as Abraham Maslow, the son of Jewish immigrants from Kyiv, bequeathed, security is one of the basic human needs. Therefore, anything can happen. True, it will be a completely different EU.
