US President Donald Trump wanted to cancel the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Washington on February 28, but French leader Emmanuel Macron convinced him not to do so.
BFMTV reported this on Thursday, February 27, citing sources.
According to the channel's sources, on February 26, the Ukrainian president received a message from the US administration that he should not go to Washington to meet with Donald Trump. After that, Zelensky allegedly called Macron, who himself contacted Donald Trump, asking him to receive his Ukrainian counterpart and adding that he was taking responsibility.
In the end, Donald Trump agreed, the French TV channel's sources say.
The journalists noted that the conversation “promises to be tense”, since the US president called his Ukrainian counterpart a “dictator” and blamed him for starting the war, supporting the Kremlin's narrative.
On February 26, Zelensky confirmed his visit to Washington on February 28 and announced preparations for negotiations.
