Macron Calls On Europe To Reject ‘Vassal Dependence’ On The US

French President Emmanuel Macron said that European policy should not be dependent on the US administration. Europe must “rediscover its taste for risk, ambition and power” in the face of US unpredictability, particularly under Donald Trump's presidency.

According to him, this position should be taken both on the issue of Ukraine and on the issue of customs duties. He spoke about this during an official visit to Portugal on February 28, BFMTV reports.

According to journalists, this official visit of the French head of state to the land of carnations, the first in more than a quarter of a century, was intended to note the depth and density of ties between the two countries. However, according to the report of the Elysee Court, Macron took the opportunity to convey his message to Europeans.

“I see many people in our Europe saying: “We will have to be nice to the Americans, this will pass, we will have to bend our backs.” But the answer is not submission, and I am not a happy vassal,” the French president said. On the contrary, he said, Europeans can be convinced of one thing: “they must be united and stronger than ever.” And to do this, Macron believes, “Europeans absolutely must make very profound choices... on technological, industrial and defense issues.”
