China, where this product is a delicacy, is behind the decision.
Rosselkhoznadzor asked Belarus to stop issuing certificates allowing the supply of chicken legs to the Russian Federation temporarily. The reason is related to changes in the rules of control over poultry meat, introduced by China. In addition, Russia itself has also strengthened control over the import and production of such products, writes ‘Zerkalo’.
Rosselkhoznadzor asked the competent authorities of Belarus to suspend the certification of chicken legs in Russia.
‘The decision was taken in accordance with an official letter from the State Customs Service of China regarding the introduction of amendments to the Protocol on inspection, quarantine, veterinary and sanitary control in relation to mutual supplies of frozen poultry meat between Russia and China and in connection with the strengthening of control over the importation into the country and manufacturing of poultry products on the territory of the Russian Federation,’ the statement reads.
A similar request was sent to Uzbekistan.
Simply put, it means that chicken legs from Belarus and Uzbekistan will temporarily not be able to be officially imported into Russia until the new rules and quality standards are sorted out there.
The decision comes into force on 10 March.
We remind you that Belarus also supplies chicken legs directly to China. This is done by the logistics hub ‘GBK - Silk Road’ (part of the business empire of one of Aliaksandr Lukashenka's associates, Viktar Sheiman), which, among other things, exports meat and offal to China and Southeast Asia.
‘We offer meat processing companies the promotion of their products to Chinese markets, and we offer consumers in China such delicacies as chicken feet and beef shanks, among others,’ the firm specifies. While in Belarus these products are not very popular in the retail trade, they are considered premium in China.
