Will Orbán Give Up Russian Gas?

An alternative from Romania has emerged.

Hungary is seeking to expand cooperation with Romania in the gas sector in order to diversify energy sources. The companies are already negotiating an agreement on gas from a new field.

This was announced by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, according to Reuters.

Romania is set to become a net exporter of natural gas as production from a new offshore gas field is set to begin soon. Drilling at the Neptun Deep gas field in the Black Sea, one of the largest gas fields in the European Union, which would double Romania's output and potentially turn it into a net exporter, could begin in a few weeks.

“This new gas field will be the only source of fresh gas in the region, which can contribute to energy diversification,” Szijjártó said after signing an energy solidarity agreement with Sebastian Ioan Burduja, Romania's energy minister.

According to him, the companies are already conducting the necessary commercial negotiations, “and we hope that they will reach an agreement that will represent progress for both countries.” Szijjártó also said that last year the gas interconnector between the two countries was used for trading a total of 1.8 billion cubic meters. The total capacity of the interconnector is 2.6 billion cubic meters per year.
