Syrian Defense Ministry: Operation Against Assad Loyalists Completed

The situation in coastal areas remains tense.

The Syrian military operation against supporters of ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad has ended, the country's Defense Ministry said on Monday, after days of intense fighting in coastal areas.

According to Reuters, Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdul Ghani said government institutions could resume their work and security forces would continue to eliminate threats from the remnants of the former regime.

“We are paving the way for returning life to normal and strengthening security and stability,” he said.

Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa had earlier vowed to bring to justice anyone responsible for the clashes. His office announced the creation of an independent committee to investigate killings and crimes committed by both sides. Abdul Ghani added that security forces would cooperate with the investigation and provide full access to information.

The violence began after forces loyal to Assad ambushed new regime security forces in Jableh, Latakia province, prompting a brutal response. In recent days, the fighting has escalated into revenge killings, particularly against Alawites, an offshoot of Shia Islam to which Assad belonged.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in two days of fighting, including 745 civilians, 125 members of the Syrian security forces and 148 fighters loyal to Assad, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Despite assurances from Damascus that order has been restored, the situation in the coastal areas remains tense, and further escalation could threaten the political transition.
