The US Secretary of State also said that he and the Ukrainian authorities will discuss the resumption of military aid to Kyiv.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the US will not provide military aid to Russia. This was reported by The New York Times on 10 March.
‘I can assure you that we will not provide military aid to the Russians,’ Rubio said.
The secretary of state added that he and Ukrainian officials are likely to discuss the resumption of military aid during meetings on 11 March.
Rubio stressed that the US position on this issue could change if he believes that Ukraine is seriously committed to peace. At the same time, the politician added that Ukraine would have to cede territories seized since 2014 to Russia as part of any peace agreement.
‘The most important thing we have to leave here with is a clear sense that Ukraine is willing to do hard things, just as the Russians have to do hard things, to end this conflict or at least suspend it in some form,’ Rubio said.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio said concessions must come from both sides.
‘I think both sides have to come to the realisation that there is no military solution to this situation. The Russians cannot conquer all of Ukraine, and obviously it's going to be very difficult for Ukraine to get the Russians to return within a reasonable time frame to where they were in 2014,’ the secretary of state said.
He added that in the upcoming talks with Moscow, it is crucial to determine what Russia is willing to concede.
‘We don't know how big their disagreements really are,’ he said.
