Latvia Proposes To Ban Travel To Belarus For Wider Range Of People

The initiative was put forward by the State Security Service of the country.

The circle of people banned from traveling to Belarus and Russia should be wider, according to the State Security Service of Latvia (SSG), Delfi reports.

The SSG recalled that in 2023, the responsible services identified an average of 1,000 cases of Latvian citizens traveling to Russia every month. Since 2024, the number of people traveling has almost doubled. As for trips to Belarus, an average of about 5,000 cases have been recorded every month since 2024.

Considering the risks posed to Latvian security by Russian and Belarusian special services, the SSG believes that the circle of people covered by the amendments to the law should be wider. The service did not provide further comments, but emphasized that Russian and Belarusian special services may be interested in using any Latvian citizen, regardless of their occupation, to obtain information.

Earlier, the National Security Committee of the Latvian Saeima proposed amendments to the law that provide for a ban on travel to Russia and Belarus for some employees of state administration bodies. Thousands of people will be subject to the ban.
