Trump's Representative Finds ‘Mistake’ In Budapest Memorandum

The special representative of the US President has reported about the ‘inconvenient fact’.

In fact, ‘Ukraine has never had its own nuclear weapons, they have always belonged to the Russian Federation.’

This was stated on the X microblog by Richard Grenell, an American diplomat, special representative of the President of the United States of America Donald Trump. He decided to ‘clarify’ to his readers the situation with the Budapest Memorandum:

‘The nuclear weapons belonged to Russia and were its remnants. Ukraine returned the nuclear weapons to Russia. It did not belong to Ukraine. This is an inconvenient fact.’

Budapest Memorandum

On 5 December 1994, a memorandum was signed in Budapest between Ukraine, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom regarding its security guarantees after abandoning nuclear weapons.

After gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine had the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world. In exchange for guaranteed security, it agreed to hand over its nuclear weapons to Russia and join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The signatories pledged to respect Ukraine's territorial integrity and political independence, and to refrain from economic pressure or aggression. They also promised to take measures to ensure its security in the event of an attack.

In an interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the decision to hand over nuclear weapons was a mistake. And if it could not be avoided, it should have been exchanged for NATO membership.
