Summit In Paris: EU Leaders To Strengthen Support For Ukraine

Kyiv will receive an additional 17 billion euros in military aid.

During the Coalition of the Willing summit in Paris, European leaders expressed their determination to continue multi-level support for Ukraine until it achieves a lasting and just peace. This was reported by DW correspondent on Thursday, 27 March, citing an EU diplomat.

During the meeting, which was attended by representatives of 31 states, as well as the EU and NATO, it was announced to strengthen military, financial and energy support for Kyiv, as well as assistance in rebuilding the country, which is waging a defensive war against Russia.

The summit pledged to provide Ukraine with an additional 17 billion euros in military aid, provide Kyiv with 2 million pieces of artillery ammunition, and improve coordination among EU member states to ensure that the support they provide matches Ukraine's needs. In addition, the European leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation with the Ukrainian defence industry and to further develop the EU mission to provide military training to Ukrainian soldiers.

Zelensky Asking Questions About Peacekeepers

‘I am grateful to France, the UK and everyone involved for their sincere desire to help us develop long-term security,’ said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who attended the meeting. He called on the allies to answer a number of specific questions: ‘Which countries will be involved on the ground, in the sky and at sea in Ukraine? Where exactly will these forces be deployed? What will be the size and structure of these forces? <...> And when will our coalition actually deploy forces in Ukraine - when the ceasefire begins or when the war is completely over and a settlement is reached?’.

Third Meeting of ‘Coalition of the Willing’

The summit, held at the Elysee Palace in Paris at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, was attended by leaders from 31 countries, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen. The more than three-hour consultations focused on security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow.

This is the third meeting in such a format, initiated by Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer amid US President Donald Trump's administration's rapprochement with Russia.

Russia is demanding the lifting of part of the sanctions amid agreements with the US on a partial ceasefire in Ukraine. A ceasefire in the Black Sea is possible only after the sanctions regime is eased, Moscow said after talks in Riyadh.
