US Treasury Department Justifies Raising Duties For China To 125%

China is the ‘most unbalanced economy’.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that China is opposing the rest of the world, while Washington is reducing duties for allies and raising them for Beijing.

This is reported by Fox Business.

At the same time, the head of the US Treasury Department does not believe that Washington is waging a trade war against China.

‘China is the most unbalanced economy in the history of the modern world,’ Bessent told reporters on Wednesday.

He said China ‘is the biggest source of trade problems for the United States and is really a problem for the rest of the world.’

Speaking to the media on 9 April, Bessent said he ‘doesn't call it a trade war, but he thinks China is escalating’.

‘And President Trump has responded very courageously to that, and we're going to work to solve the problem with our trading partner,’ the US Treasury Department chief added.

However, Bessent says that more than 75 countries have contacted the Trump administration to work on finding a trade solution, and he expects the number to be even higher.

It is worth adding that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed similar sentiments and said China has ‘deviated’ from other countries by refusing to come to the negotiating table with the US for a new trade agreement.

‘The world is willing to work with President Trump to establish global trade, while China has chosen the opposite direction,’ Lutnick wrote on his X (Twitter) account on Wednesday.

We remind you that President Donald Trump announced on 9 April that he would reduce recently imposed reciprocal duties for several countries and also announced an immediate duty rise of up to 125% for Chinese goods.
