This tactic may neutralize Russia's advantage in manpower.
A Ukrainian fighter jet struck a Russian command bunker in the Kherson region, destroying the headquarters of the 81st Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment of the Russian Federation. Such strikes demoralize Russian occupiers and deprive them of clear command, writes Forbes.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, about 30 Russian military personnel from the command staff were killed in this strike. After the attack, a Ukrainian drone captured footage of the survivors attempting to clear the rubble by hand.
"Such strikes deprive enemy forces of clear leadership and significantly demoralize the personnel. No leadership — no landing on our islands," noted Ukrainian blogger "Sonashnyk."
This is the second airstrike by the Ukrainian Air Force on Russian bunkers in the region in recent days. On March 31, a MiG-29 struck a former Soviet bunker used by a Russian command group with an American GBU-62 bomb.
The 81st Regiment belongs to the 70th Motorized Rifle Division, which is part of Russia's 18th Combined Arms Army. These forces provide Russia with firepower superiority on the left bank of the Dnieper.
Despite Russia's possible preparations for an offensive, Ukrainian forces in Kherson are limited. The military command is focusing its main forces in the east. The region's defense is held by the 34th, 39th, and 40th Marine Brigades, primarily armed with light equipment.
The destruction of command posts allows the Ukrainian forces to compensate for the enemy's numerical superiority. The loss of commanders demoralizes troops and disrupts command.
"We look forward to the Russians trying to attack us," said one Ukrainian artilleryman to NPR. "This will give us a chance to eliminate more of them."
The publication concludes that blowing up command bunkers and eliminating officers can neutralize Russia's advantage in manpower by depriving that human force of leadership.
