Pope Francis Receives British King Charles III, Queen Camilla

The Pontiff congratulated the royal couple on their twentieth wedding anniversary.

On April 9, Pope Francis met with King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla as part of the British monarch's state visit to Italy. King Charles III, who is the head of the Church of England, met with Pope Francis for the first time since he ascended the throne in 2022, Radio Svaboda reports.

As noted in the AFP report, the meeting came as a surprise to many, as Buckingham Palace had previously said the planned audience had been cancelled due to the 88-year-old pontiff's deteriorating health. Pope Francis, who leads 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, is recovering after spending five weeks in hospital with a severe form of pneumonia.

According to reports from the Vatican and Buckingham Palace, Pope Francis congratulated the royal couple on their twentieth wedding anniversary, which Charles and Camilla celebrated on Wednesday.

‘Their Majesties were delighted that the Pope felt well enough to receive them and that they had the opportunity to exchange warm words in person,’ Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

King Charles III, 76, has been battling cancer for more than a year. Less than a fortnight ago, he was briefly hospitalised due to the side effects of therapy. After several days of recovery, the King returned to duty on 1 April.

Pope Francis, who was twice close to death while being treated for bilateral pneumonia, has continued his recovery since returning to the Vatican on 23 March. Despite a prescribed two-month rest, the pontiff made a surprise appearance in St Peter's Square on Sunday to attend the closing of the mass.
