The dictator has finally become a kept dependent.
Economist Siarhei Chaly commented on the new dynamics in the relationship between the Lukashenka and Putin regimes.
On the eve of Prime Minister Aliaksandr Turchyn’s recent visit to Moscow, the ruler of Belarus said to him:
– We must give credit where it’s due: President Putin has supported us on all issues, from financial matters to oil pricing and so on. We talked about adjusting the price of Russian oil deliveries so our enterprises can keep operating. We don’t need sky-high profitability. Just 7-8%, and that’s enough…
During the visit, we need to ask the Russian government to settle these issues once and for all, because there were instructions given to the Russian government to do this and that, and those matters need to be resolved.
Siarhei Chaly commented on the situation on the BRC channel:
– Much has been said about the Belarusian economy’s dependence on Russia. But this is beyond extreme now. It’s one thing when you’re left with only one market and you ask to remove trade barriers, to include us in procurement programs, and so on.
But when you say, “Make it so that we have a 7-8% profitability”… And the funniest part is, this logic isn’t just limited to oil. Zerkalo published a story: during last year’s negotiations on potash fertilizer exports to China, Russian producers argued that too much supply would cause prices to drop significantly. And our side said: we’re willing to accept that, but in return, you should pay us for it.
This is exactly the same thing. It’s so close to the most humiliating position possible, where the next and final step would be: “Why don’t you just start paying us?” “Why don’t you just keep us?”
