There will be no lifting of sanctions.
The US State Department has said that it is not going to lift any sanctions on Russia until there is a ceasefire. Also, after Russia's attack in Sumy on 13 April, Washington started to doubt that the Kremlin actually wants peace. At the same time, the White House said that the Russian Federation has a ‘motivation’ to end the war.
This was said by the department's press secretary Tammy Bruce during an evening briefing on 15 April.
While speaking to reporters, she was asked about the latest talks between the US and Russian sides on Friday, 11 April: then the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, Steve Whitkoff, arrived in Moscow, where he held a meeting with Vladimir Putin. Correspondents also asked the department's spokesperson whether there was a possibility of lifting the sanctions imposed on Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.
Bruce reacted sharply to the question, noting that the US will not grant any favours to Russia until it stops the bloody war in Ukraine.
‘There will be no negotiations, no solutions, no agreements until this massacre is stopped,’ she said.
Bruce also reminded that the U.S. continues to work to end the war. She called the Russian-Ukrainian war ‘a meat grinder’, noting that ‘nothing has changed there.’
In addition, the US State Department spokeswoman recalled the Russian attack in Sumy on 13 April, when many people were killed and injured. According to her, looking at that shelling, Washington began to doubt whether the Kremlin really seeks to end the war and conclude a peace agreement.
Trump Still Believes Russia Wants to End the War
Also on 15 April, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt spoke at another US briefing. She expressed a slightly different position, noting that US President Donald Trump still believes that the Kremlin wants to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
‘There was a productive conversation. As the president's envoy Steve Whitkoff said last night, he believes that Russia wants to end this war and the president believes that as well,‘ Leavitt said.
At the same time, the White House spokeswoman said that the Kremlin has some motivation to end the war, in particular - possible economic co-operation with the US. However, she called it possible only under the condition of a ceasefire.
It should be noted that Russia's hopes for the lifting of sanctions were voiced by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov when he said on 11 April that the Kremlin had raised the issue with the United States regarding them.
