India Reports Its Citizen Missing In Belarus

A criminal case has been opened.

According to The Indian Express, 26-year-old Indian Deepak Kumar from the state of Punjab went missing last summer. His father, Vijay Kumar, said that his son tried to get into the European Union through agents. The intended final destination was Portugal, with the Netherlands as an intermediate destination.

According to the father, the agents took 1.15 million rupees (approximately $13,400) for their services and a Dutch Schengen visa. On June 24, 2024, Kumar flew to Russia via Dubai, from where he was promised a direct flight to the Netherlands, but was sent to Belarus instead. According to the missing man's father, the agent's representatives took his son's passport and $1,500.

The agent reported that Kumar was detained at the border and was to be deported. The missing man's father contacted the local police. The case is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, crimes related to the movement of migrants have been increasingly recorded in Belarus. Thus, on March 28, the capital's prosecutor's office reported that it had sent a criminal case to the Minsk City Court on the kidnapping of two Indian citizens and extortion, recalls Pozirk.

Charges were brought against a 31-year-old foreign citizen. According to the case materials, in August 2024, the accused, “acting as a group of people, kidnapped two people and, using violence against them, extorted money from their relatives.”

And in January of this year, the police of the Indian state of Haryana opened a criminal case against a travel company from Patiala (Punjab state) in connection with an appeal from relatives of Majid Ahmad, to whom the aforementioned travel company promised assistance in migrating to Germany through Russia and Belarus.
