Officials are expecting a possible deficit.
Retail chains are sounding the alarm over a shortage of cucumbers. Against this background, the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade (MART) predicted a possible shortage of the product in April. This follows from a non-public letter from this department to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, which was received by Zerkalo.
"A situation with a possible shortage of fresh cucumbers grown by the republic's greenhouse complexes is predicted on the republic's consumer market," begins the letter from MART, dated April 1, 2025. It goes on to clarify that the ministry has begun to receive messages from retail chains asking for help in supplying the market with this vegetable in April.
Among the reasons for the disruption in supplies, the department noted the failure of producers to fulfill plans for the volume of products that they were supposed to sell on the domestic market, as well as "a change in their growing cycle" at the end of March.
For example, as the structure claims, Eurotorg received less than half of the volume that it had previously agreed upon with suppliers. Meanwhile, Dobronom had problems receiving the product since March 23.
In general, cucumber producers also did not provide trade with as much product as expected in March. Moreover, state-owned companies violated the plans: DorOrs provided trade with only about half of the planned volumes, Vesna-Energo and Agro Favit - about 60%.
At the end of the letter, the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to provide the retail network (it is not very clear from the text whether this refers specifically to Dobronom or to retail in general) with the product in order to avoid a shortage before Easter. The department also advised identifying specific suppliers who have the necessary volumes of fresh cucumbers in April and May, and approving a schedule for their delivery to retailers. "This will allow us to control resources and provide producers with guaranteed sales of the grown products," the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade emphasized.
This is not the first time that problems have emerged with this particular product grown in Belarus. For example, a shortage arose in autumn 2024.
