Grid operator rules out cyberattack.
Spain's national grid operator Red Eléctrica de España has ruled out a cyberattack and pointed to a drop in solar generation as the preliminary cause of the country's power outage, El Pais reports.
Red Eléctrica has ruled out that the massive power outage that hit the peninsula on Monday and Tuesday was caused by a cyberattack or any unusual meteorological or atmospheric phenomenon.
Eduardo Prieto, director of operations at Red Eléctrica, spoke at a press conference about two consecutive "generation outages" that occurred at 12:32 p.m., just one and a half seconds apart.
The system was able to recover after the first event, but failed to do so after the second one, which caused the entire power supply on the Iberian Peninsula to cut off.
Prieto explained that the cause of the loss of generation is still under investigation. But he specified that it happened in the southwestern region.
When asked by journalists, he admitted that it was "very likely" that solar generation was damaged.
It is important to note that on April 28 at about 12:30 local time, the entire Iberian Peninsula - Spain, Portugal and some areas of France - was left without electricity.
The emergency affected all areas of life - payments were only possible in cash, traffic lights went out on city streets, trains and the metro stopped. The Spanish authorities declared a state of emergency.
Portugal and Spain reported the restoration of power supply on Tuesday morning.
